The “grandchild in trouble” call

This is the scam to know first. With AI, a stranger can copy a voice from a few seconds of video. Then they call sounding just like your grandchild, scared and begging for help. Let’s learn to spot it together, calmly.

Step 1 See what it looks like

Incoming callUnknown number
What you hear on the call

Grandma? It’s me. (crying) I’m so scared. I had a car accident and now I’m in jail. Please don’t tell Mom and Dad, they will be so angry. I need bail money right now. A lawyer is going to call you to collect it. You’re the only one I can trust. Please hurry.

This is a made-up example to teach you. We will never show you a real person’s message.

Step 2 Find the red flags

  1. 1

    It’s me

They did not say a name. They want YOU to say it first, so they know who to pretend to be.

  2. 2

    (crying), scared, hurry

Big feelings and rush stop you from thinking clearly. That is the whole plan.

  3. 3

    Don’t tell Mom and Dad

Secrecy. A real emergency is never a secret. They want to stop you from checking with family.

  4. 4

A lawyer will call to collect it

A stranger collecting cash, gift cards, or a wire is not how real courts or jails work. Ever.

Step 3 See why it works

It works because it mixes love and fear. You hear a voice like your grandchild’s, in trouble, and your heart wants to help fast. The AI voice makes it feel real. The secrecy and the rush keep you from doing the one thing that would save you: calling to check.

What to do
  1. Take a slow breath. Scammers need you scared and fast. Slowing down breaks the trick.
  2. Hang up. Then call your grandchild, or their parent, on the number you already have saved.
  3. Ask a question only your real family would know. A family safe word is perfect for this.
  4. Never send money, gift cards, or cash to a courier for someone you cannot reach back.
  5. If you feel unsure, call one trusted person before you do anything at all.

Remember this one thing

If a call is scary, rushed, and secret, it is almost always a scam. Hang up and call back on a number you trust.
