Is it safe to click links ChatGPT gives me?
Treat a link in a ChatGPT reply as unverified until you check where it leads.
A link can be wrong, out of date or point to an unsafe site. ChatGPT may supply one that looks right. Its presence in a reply is not an endorsement.
A real site may ask you to sign in. A fake site may do the same. The sign-in form alone cannot tell you which one you have.
- For money, account access or private files, open the firm's known app or saved site yourself.
- Check the actual web address, not just the words on the link. A brand name can appear inside an unrelated address.
- If the address is shortened or unclear, find the same page through the known site. You do not have to click to investigate.
- Do not treat HTTPS or a lock symbol as proof of an honest site.
- If you already shared details on a suspect page, follow the relevant account or payment service's recovery steps.
Explain why a company name in a link label is not proof of the destination. Give a plain checklist for finding support through a firm's own app. Do not provide a live test link.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
Asking ChatGPT if its own link is safe does not replace checking the destination.
