The short version
- The lessons are free and you can read them without an account.
- If you create a free account, we store your name, email, and your learning progress, so we can save your place.
- We send only the emails you would expect (verify your address, reset your password, and any newsletter you choose to join). No spam, ever.
- We do not sell your identifiable personal information to advertisers or data brokers.
- We may use and share aggregated or de-identified information, and if Mayfield is ever sold or merges with another company, your information may transfer as part of that deal (see “Business transfers” below).
- You can access, export, or delete your account and data at any time.
What we collect
Account information. When you register, we store your name, email address, and a securely hashed password (we never see or store your actual password).
Learning progress. Your completed lessons, saved articles, current lesson step, and practice drafts sync through your account. Do not put private or sensitive information in a practice draft. Without an account, this learning information stays in this browser and does not sync to another device. This browser also keeps an account-specific draft copy so an interrupted save can be retried. Signing out does not erase that copy. On a shared device, make sure your work has synced, then clear this site’s browser data when you are done.
Usage and technical data. Standard server logs and, if you agree, first-party analytics about how the lessons are used. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.
Cookies and analytics
When you log in we set a secure session cookie so you stay signed in. We use first-party analytics to see how the lessons are working and improve them; we do not use cross-site advertising trackers. We ask before enabling optional analytics, whether or not you have an account. Signing in does not count as agreeing to analytics. We honor Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track. You can opt out of analytics at any time, and you can read every lesson without logging in.
How we use your information
- To provide the service and save your learning progress.
- To send the account emails you would expect (verification, password reset) and any newsletter you opt into, via our email provider, Resend.
- To keep the site secure (for example, checking new passwords against known data-breach lists).
- To understand how people learn and to improve and develop our lessons, content, features, and tools, including through aggregated and de-identified analysis.
Who we share it with
We share your information with the trusted service providers that run Mayfield on our behalf (hosting: Vercel; database: Neon; email: Resend), only as needed to operate the service. We may disclose information when required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of Mayfield and its users. We may share or sell aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you. We do not sell your identifiable personal information to advertisers or data brokers.
Business transfers
Mayfield Learning is a business. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, investment, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or a sale of some or all of our assets, your information may be transferred or sold to the parties involved as part of that transaction. We will require the recipient to honor this Privacy Policy, or we will give registered users notice before their information becomes subject to a materially different policy.
Your choices and rights
You can view, correct, export, or delete your account and associated data at any time, just email us. Deleting your account removes its profile, sign-ins, learning progress, saved articles, lesson drafts, and account-linked analytics from our active systems. Unconfirmed newsletter requests are also removed. It does not automatically remove a newsletter subscription you separately chose to join, past support messages, or records of administrative actions. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR (EU and UK) or the CCPA and CPRA (California), including the right to access, delete, or port your data, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. To exercise any of these, email us, and we will honor verified requests.
Data retention and security
We keep account learning data while the account is active. Newsletter subscriptions you separately chose and confirmed continue after account deletion until you unsubscribe. We keep support history separately until you request its removal, so we can handle and follow up on your requests. To unsubscribe or request removal of support history, contact us and name what you want removed; you do not need to keep an account. We may retain records needed for security, disputes, or legal obligations, and will explain any exception when handling a verified request. Copies in backups are not used for normal service; a restore must reapply deletion and opt-out requests before returning to service. Passwords are hashed, connections are encrypted, and access is limited. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and minimize what we hold.
Children
Mayfield Learning is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we delete it if we learn we have. If you are under 18, please use Mayfield with a parent or guardian.
Changes
If we update this policy, we’ll change the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, let registered users know.
