How to log out of ChatGPT safely
End your ChatGPT session and check what is still left on a shared device.
On the ChatGPT website, open your profile menu and select Log out. Closing a tab or window alone may leave you signed in.
Check that your account's private chats no longer open. Check the account shown in the profile menu too. A chat box alone does not prove you are signed in.
Logout does not erase downloads or saved passwords. It does not sign you out of every other service. Use your own device for private tasks when you can.
- Save work you want to keep in your own safe place.
- Use Log out from the profile menu. Reopen the site and check the account state.
- If you used a sign-in service such as Google, sign out of that service on the shared device too. Do not leave your password saved there.
- Remove your own downloaded private files and close your session. Ask the device owner for help if needed; do not delete anyone else's work.
Make a short paper checklist for leaving a shared computer after using ChatGPT. Include account sign-out and checking my own downloads. Do not claim to log me out or erase files.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

Forgot to sign out? On a trusted device, use the account's security help. Look for a way to review and end other sessions.
