The "your computer has a virus" pop-up

A scary pop-up can jump onto your screen. It looks official and feels urgent. Take a breath. The pop-up cannot hurt your computer. You stay safe. Do not click it. Do not call the number.

This is a made-up example to teach you. We will never show you a real person’s message.

Step 2 Find the red flags

  1. 1

    Call Microsoft Support now: 1-800-555-0199

Real virus warnings never give you a number to call. Microsoft and Apple never do this.

  2. 2

DO NOT turn off your computer or close this window

They say this so you cannot stop or think. A real warning never tells you that.

  3. 3

    right now

Rushing you stops you from checking. Real help is never this rushed.

  4. 4

A certified technician will fix this

If you call, they ask to control your screen. Then they ask you to pay, often with gift cards. That is the trap.

  5. 5

Hackers may be stealing your passwords

Scary words make your heart race. They want you to call before you think.

Step 3 See why it works

The pop-up looks official. It uses a big trusted name like Microsoft or Apple. It scares you about your money and passwords. Then it tells you not to close it. That fear and rush make you call. A stranger then asks to control your screen. They ask you to pay with gift cards.

What to do
  1. Do not call the number on the screen. It is not real support. Microsoft and Apple never put a number in a virus warning.
  2. Take a slow breath. The pop-up cannot harm your computer. It only works if you click inside it.
  3. Do not click anything inside the pop-up. Not even the X to close it. That click is part of the trick.
  4. Close the whole web browser window instead. If it will not close, turn the computer fully off. Wait a moment. Then turn it back on. That clears the pop-up.
  5. Never let a stranger take control of your screen. Never pay for computer help with gift cards. Real support never asks for that.
  6. Remember this too. A real company will never cold-call you about a virus. If you get a call like that, hang up.
  7. Did you already call or let someone in? Do not pay. Hang up or close the screen. Then call your bank using the number on your card. If you can, change your passwords from a different device.
  8. When you want help, call a person you know and trust. Or use a local shop you found yourself.

Remember this one thing

Real companies never put a number in a virus warning. They never cold-call you about a virus. Do not click. Do not call. Do not pay.
