What a file is, and how to find one

Files can feel like a mystery. But a file is just a saved thing. It can be a photo or a letter. Your phone and computer already keep them safe. So nothing is lost. Once you know where to look, you will feel at home. You can do this.

A file is simple. It is any one thing you saved. It can be a photo or a note. Every phone and computer has a free place for them. Let me show you where to look.

Find your device below, then follow those steps. The buttons may look a little different on yours, that is okay.

On an iPhone
  1. Go to your home screen with your apps.
  2. Look for an app called Files.
  3. Its picture is a blue folder.
  4. If you do not see it, swipe down on the screen.
  5. Type the word Files in the search box.
  6. Tap Files to open it.
  7. Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap On My iPhone.
  9. If you do not see that, tap iCloud Drive instead.
  10. Look for a folder called Downloads and tap it.
  11. Your saved files are listed here.
  12. Tap any file to open it and look inside.
On an Android phone
  1. Go to your home screen with your apps.
  2. Look for an app called Files, My Files, or File Manager.
  3. It may look a bit different on each phone.
  4. That is okay.
  5. Tap it to open it.
  6. Look for the word Downloads and tap it.
  7. If you do not see Downloads, tap Internal storage.
  8. Then look for a folder called Download.
  9. Your saved files are listed here.
  10. Tap any file to open it and look inside.
On a Windows computer
  1. Look along the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Find a yellow folder picture and click it once.
  3. This opens a window called File Explorer.
  4. On the left side, look for the word Downloads.
  5. Click the word Downloads.
  6. Your saved files are listed here.
  7. Double click any file to open it and look inside.
On a Mac computer
  1. Look along the row of icons at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Find a blue smiling face and click it once.
  3. This is called Finder.
  4. A window opens showing your files.
  5. On the left side, look for the word Downloads.
  6. Click the word Downloads.
  7. Your saved files are listed here.
  8. Double click any file to open it and look inside.
