Sometimes a website asks for a short code after your password. The code is a quick way for the site to know it is you. This lesson shows you what it is. It also shows you how to use it.

On most phones and computers
  1. Type your password the way you always do.
  2. The website says it sent you a code.
  3. The code comes by text message or by email.
  4. Open your text messages or open your email.
  5. Look for a brand-new message with numbers in it.
  6. The code is short. It is often about 6 numbers.
  7. Read the numbers slowly and carefully.
  8. Go back to the website.
  9. Find the small box that asks for the code.
  10. Type the numbers into that box.
  11. Take your time. There is no rush.
  12. Find the button that says Continue, Verify, Submit, or Next.
  13. Press that button.
  14. That is it. You are now logged in and safer.

Buddy’s tip

The code only works for a few minutes. If it stops working, ask the website to send a new one. That is normal. You did nothing wrong.

Only enter a code right after you log in yourself. Never read or send your code to anyone who contacts you. This is true even if they sound official. A real company will never call you to ask for it.
