Why did ChatGPT give me a fact that was clearly wrong?
Check a wrong AI reply against the real source before trying its instructions.
ChatGPT can sound sure while getting a fact or step wrong. It may use old information, miss context or invent a detail. The mistake does not mean you failed at asking.
Asking it to try again can help, but its next reply still needs a check. Use the real notice, manual or current app screen.
Try this example: the source says the desk closes at 6 pm. The AI says 7 pm. You can point to the mismatch and ask it to correct that fact.
- Pause before following a step that could spend money, change an account or affect safety.
- Find the original source. Check that it matches the product, date and task.
- Name the exact mismatch. Use the sample below to practice.
- Check the new reply against the source. If a step or fact still cannot be verified, stop there and use the provider's help.
Practice only. Source: 'The help desk closes at 6 pm.' Your draft says 7 pm. Correct the draft using only the source. Do not add opening hours or a location.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
A second confident answer is not a second independent source.
