What is two-step login and should I turn it on?
Add a second sign-in check. Keep a safe way back into your account.
Two-step login adds a check, often after your password. It may be called two-factor authentication or MFA.
You might use a security key, an app or a text code. A key or authenticator app is a stronger choice than text. If text is all the account offers, it still helps.
This lowers risk. It does not make every request safe. Never approve a sign-in you did not start. Do not give someone a code to 'help' you.
- Use your trusted device and the real account. Open its security settings. Find the two-step or MFA setup.
- Follow the steps for a method you can use.
- Keep any backup codes in a safe place. Do not keep the only copy on a phone you could lose. Do not paste them into ChatGPT.
- Check that setup is complete. Check your recovery details too. Follow the service's steps to test sign-in.
Explain two-step login in short sentences. Give one example of a real sign-in check. Give one example of a request I should refuse. Do not ask for codes.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
Let an account trust only devices you control. Do not save that trust on a public computer.
