Should I paste my whole tax return into ChatGPT?

You will learn to ask tax questions without sharing your private tax papers.

It is best not to paste your full tax return into ChatGPT. It holds many private numbers.

The good news is you do not need to. You can ask your question in a general way.

Ask about the rule or the word you do not understand. You will get a helpful answer without sharing your papers.

Tax can be tricky. For your real return, a tax helper or the official tax office is the safe choice.

Try this
  1. Ask about the general rule, not your exact return.
  2. Leave out your name, address, and Social Security number.
  3. Take real return questions to a trusted tax helper.
A message you can copy

I am trying to understand my taxes. Can you explain what [tax word or topic] means in plain English? I will not share any of my private numbers.

Paste it into ChatGPT, then change the words in brackets to fit you. It opens in a new tab, so you will not lose this page.
