Should I ever type my Social Security number into ChatGPT?
Keep this private number out of AI chats. Get the right help if it was exposed.
Do not type your Social Security number into ChatGPT. You can ask what it is used for without sharing it.
Already shared it? Do not post it again to ask for help. Review the chat and other stored copies you control. Remove them with the real controls. That cannot prove all copies are gone.
Sharing it does not prove someone has used it. If others may have it, follow the FTC's breach guide. If someone is using it, get a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.
- For learning, ask a broad question with no real digits.
- If you shared it, note where it went. Include the chat, file or shared link.
- Use the site's privacy controls to remove stored copies. Stop public sharing if it was on.
- Read the FTC guide below about credit reports, fraud alerts and freezes. If you see misuse, contact the bank or agency involved.
Explain why a Social Security number should stay private. Use short sentences. Do not ask for any part of mine or make up a number.

A chat reply that says 'I forgot it' does not prove that the service erased the data.
