My grandchild uses AI for homework. Is that okay?
Check the school and app rules. Use AI help in a way that still lets the child learn.
AI can help explain an idea or offer a hint, but whether a child may use it depends on the school's rules and the service's age limits. Check with the parent or carer too.
An adult can prepare an example on paper without giving a child an AI account. Do not share a child's name, school, grades or private school records.
Copying an AI answer does not show that the child understands it. Ask them to explain a step in their own words and check the result with the class method.
- Ask the teacher what help is allowed and how any AI use must be named.
- Use the sample as an adult. Read the reply before sharing it.
- For 3 groups of 4, draw three groups with four dots in each. Count all 12 dots together.
- Let the child try a similar task without the AI answer. If they are stuck, give a hint or ask the teacher for help.
For an adult-led lesson, give one hint for working out 3 groups of 4. Do not give the final number. Use plain words. Do not ask for a child's details.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
Follow the teacher's rules even if an AI says the work is allowed.
