How do I ask ChatGPT to go step by step?
You will learn to have ChatGPT walk you through one step at a time.
A big task can be easier to follow in small steps.
Ask ChatGPT for one step, then ask it to wait for you. It may still give too much at once.
If that happens, ask for just the first step again. Check each step before you try it.
Try this
- Name the task, with private details left out.
- Ask for one small step at a time.
- Read and check that step. Pause if it asks for a risky action.
- When ready, type next for another step.
A message you can copy
Please walk me through [your task] one small step at a time. Wait for me to say 'next' before each new step.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

For a payment, account change, or safety task, check the real instructions. Do not follow a chat reply blindly.
