How do I ask ChatGPT to slow down and go step by step?
Ask for one step and choose when to move on.
You can ask for one step per reply. This can make a long task easier to follow.
Read each step before you do it. A clear instruction can still be wrong.
Try this
- State the task you want help with.
- Ask for just the first step and a pause.
- Check that the step fits your screen and goal.
- If it does not, describe what you see. Leave out private details.
- After you finish a safe step, ask for the next one.
- If it sends a long list, ask it to repeat only step one.
A message you can copy
Help me with [task]. Give me only one step per reply. Wait for me to say done. Ask before a step that deletes, pays, or shares.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
Buddy says
Pause before any step that deletes, pays, or shares. Check what it will do first.
