How do I agree on a safe word with my family?
Choose a private word together and agree on a separate way to check calls.
A family safe word is one extra check for an urgent request. It is not a guarantee. Someone may learn it, and a real loved one may forget it.
Agree on the word in person or in a private conversation where you have checked who is there.
The more useful plan includes known phone numbers and someone else to call if the first person does not answer.
- Explain the plan at a calm time. Ask what will be easy for each person to use.
- Pick a word privately. Avoid one that is clear from public posts, such as a pet's name.
- Keep the actual word out of ChatGPT, public posts and shared examples.
- Agree to check money requests by calling a number saved before the request. Use a backup family contact if needed.
- Change the word if it is exposed. Do not treat a forgotten word as proof of a scam.
Write a warm invitation for my family to make a call-checking plan. Include a known callback number and a backup contact. Refer to '[private word]' only. Do not choose or ask for our actual word.
