Does ChatGPT remember everything I tell it?
Learn which past facts a new chat may use. Review what you want to keep.
ChatGPT does not recall every fact. It can use this chat. With memory on, it may also use facts from past work.
Saved chats are the old threads in your history. Memory can bring facts into a new thread. Files can be kept too. These are not all one store.
On the web, go to Settings, then Personalization. Check the memory controls shown for your account. Local Codex has its own controls.
- Check what your account can save and use. Read each choice before you change it.
- Review saved facts if that option is shown. Use the real control to remove ones you do not want kept.
- Check old chats and stored files too. Look in Library or projects if you use them.
- Check each place again after a change. A new chat, an off switch or a reply saying 'I forgot' does not prove every copy is gone.
Use made-up facts to explain three things: an old chat, a fact saved for future chats, and a stored file. Use short sentences. Do not claim to inspect or erase my data.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.
Do not share a secret to test the off switch. Check the settings instead.
