Can ChatGPT see my photos and files on my computer?
Find out what files and tools your current chat can use.
A web chat does not get every file on your computer just because you open it. Files you attach, project files and linked apps can give it more to use.
Some desktop tools can use local files, apps or your screen. This needs the right access. It depends on the mode, device and account.
Check which tools and files are in use. Do not trust a claim that ChatGPT can never see them.
- Check the files attached to the chat and project. Remove those you do not want it to use before you send the request.
- Check linked apps in the app's settings. Check screen and file access in your device settings too.
- Try a short writing task with made-up facts. It does not need your photo folder or screen.
- After a change, check the saved choice. Stopping access does not erase copies already kept in chats or files.
Make a blank list I can fill in on paper. Use these headings: files in this chat, project files, linked apps, device access. Do not inspect my files or change settings.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

If an access request is unclear, leave it off. Check the service's guide. You may then be unable to use that feature.
