Did a strange text or email worry you? You can paste it into ChatGPT and ask if it looks like a scam.

That is a wonderful helper. But ChatGPT is only making a smart guess.

It can be wrong in two ways. It might call a real message a scam. Or it might miss a real scam.

So here is the one rule for today:

The first check

Look for reasons, not just a yes or no.

ChatGPT may say, "This looks like a scam." That alone is not proof.

So ask it to list why. Type, "List your reasons."

Good reasons point to real signs in the message. Maybe it rushes you. Maybe it asks for money. Maybe it has an odd link.

Before you paste a message, take out private details. Remove your name, your address, and any card or account numbers.

Keep only the words of the message. When in doubt, leave it out.

This looks like a scam. Here is why. First, it rushes you to act right now. Second, it asks you for money. Third, real shippers do not text you for fees like this. Do not pay, and do not tap any link. Call the shipper using a number from their real website.

The second check

Find the real contact on your own.

The phone number or link inside a scam message is fake. Never use it.

Find your own trusted contact instead. Here are three easy places:

The back of your cardyour bank's real number is printed right there

An old billthe company's real number is on it

Your own searchtype the company name yourself, then use their site

Then call or visit that source. Tell them what the message said. Ask, "Did you really send this?"

Never give a password or a code to settle it. Only the real company can tell you the truth.

Ask ChatGPT to check a safe message.

Paste a low-stakes message and ask ChatGPT for reasons. Use a made-up, harmless one, like a notice about a library book or a club meeting. Leave out anything private. Start with: Tell me if this looks like a scam, and list your reasons.

Stuck? Use a fake notice that says, "Your library book is overdue. Click here to renew." Then ask ChatGPT for its reasons.

You let ChatGPT help, then confirmed the truth yourself.
