Attach a photo to an email

Photos are a lovely way to share a moment. When you attach a photo, you only send a copy. The real photo stays safe on your device. You can send the same photo as many times as you like.

Adding a photo to an email is easy once you know where to look. We will do it one small step at a time, together.

Find your device below, then follow those steps. The buttons may look a little different on yours, that is okay.

On an iPhone (built-in Mail app)
  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Tap the button to write a new email.
  3. It looks like a pencil inside a square, near the bottom.
  4. In the To box, type your friend's email address.
  5. Tap once in the big empty space where you write.
  6. Look just above the keyboard.
  7. A small row of little pictures appears.
  8. Tap the photo icon.
  9. It looks like two small photos or a tiny landscape.
  10. Tap the photo you want.
  11. It is now added to your email.
  12. Wait until you can see the photo in your email.
  13. Then tap the Send button.
  14. It is an arrow at the top right.
On an iPhone (Gmail app)
  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the round button with a pencil.
  3. This starts a new email.
  4. In the To box, type your friend's email address.
  5. Look near the top for a small paperclip icon.
  6. The paperclip means attach.
  7. Tap the paperclip.
  8. Tap Photos.
  9. Tap the photo you want.
  10. Wait until the photo's name shows in your email.
  11. Then tap the Send arrow at the top.
On an Android phone (Gmail app)
  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the button to write a new email.
  3. It may show a plus sign or a pencil.
  4. In the To box, type your friend's email address.
  5. Look near the top for a small paperclip icon.
  6. The paperclip means attach.
  7. Tap the paperclip.
  8. A small menu opens.
  9. Tap a photo choice, like Photos or Gallery.
  10. Tap the photo you want to send.
  11. Wait until the photo's name shows in your email.
  12. Then tap the Send arrow at the top.
On a computer
  1. Open your email in your web browser, like Gmail.
  2. Click the button to write a new email.
  3. It may say Compose or New.
  4. In the To box, type your friend's email address.
  5. Look for a small paperclip icon.
  6. In Gmail it sits near the bottom of the new message.
  7. The paperclip means attach.
  8. Click the paperclip.
  9. A window opens to find your photos.
  10. Click your photo once.
  11. Then click Open or Choose.
  12. Wait until the photo appears in your email.
  13. Then click the Send button.
