How do I understand the calorie line on a food label?
Check the column heading before you multiply.
A calorie line tells you the energy for the amount named above it. That might be one serving or a whole pack.
Here is a made-up dual-column label: 150 calories per serving and 300 per pack. If you use the whole-pack column, the total is already there.
ChatGPT can talk through both columns. Check the reply against the headings. Do not count the pack twice.
- Read each column heading first.
- Find the calories under the heading you need.
- Check how many servings the pack holds.
- In this example, two servings make one pack: 150 times 2 is 300.
Use this made-up label. There are two servings per pack. It has 150 calories per serving, or 300 per pack. Why should I not multiply the 300 by two? Keep it short. Do not set a food goal for me.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

The right column matters as much as the number. This example is label practice, not a meal goal.
