How do I understand the calories on a food label?
Read calories as energy for the amount shown on the pack.
Calories measure the energy in food and drink. Find the amount at the top of the column. The calorie number is for that amount.
Use a made-up snack label: 80 calories per serving. Two servings have 160 calories. That is label math, not advice about how much to eat.
The 2,000-calorie note on US labels is a general reference. It does not tell you your own daily needs.
- Find the serving size and the right column.
- Check how many servings are in the amount you are reading about.
- Ask ChatGPT what the numbers mean. Use only the facts on the label.
- Check the math yourself. Do not ask it to set a weight-loss or food target.
Use this made-up snack label: 80 calories per serving. The pack holds two servings. Explain what calories mean. Show the whole-pack total. Do not set a food goal for me.
