How do I stop ChatGPT from saving new chats?
Use a chat that stays out of your main list.
Temporary Chat is a choice for a chat outside your usual list. Read its notice before you type.
Do not assume a switch for data use also stops chat history. What is saved, what is used, and what is remembered can have separate controls.
A chat that is not in your list may still be kept for some uses. Do not type secrets there.
Try this
- Start a new chat and look for Temporary Chat.
- In the Mac desktop app, Command+Shift+N opens a new temporary chat.
- Check that this mode is on. Read what its notice says will be kept or used.
- For other choices, open Settings. Review Data controls and Personalization.
- If you cannot find the mode, do not assume it is on.

A new blank chat is not the same as a temporary chat. Check the mode each time.
