Why does ChatGPT call me by a name I did not give?
Choose what you want to be called in a chat.
A name in a reply may come from what you shared, saved preferences, or an error. The reply alone does not prove its source.
You can ask for a different name in this chat. That does not by itself prove your account profile changed.
Try this
- Tell ChatGPT what you want to be called, or ask it to use no name.
- Check the next reply.
- For a choice across chats, review Settings, then Personalization.
- Check any saved name or instruction there. Change only what you mean to change.
- For a display name, look in your account or profile settings. That is a separate setting.
A message you can copy
In this chat, please call me [nickname]. Do not use my full name.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

Buddy says
You can use a nickname. Most questions do not need your full name.
