How do I make sense of a letter from the government?
Find out what a notice asks you to do.
ChatGPT can explain a short passage, but cannot verify who sent a letter. Use the agency's official site or a contact route you already trust to check a real notice.
Sample: 'Return the form by October 6.' This says what to return and one date. It leaves out the year, how to send it and whether it must arrive by then.
Keep the full notice private. Check deadlines and missing instructions with the agency. Do not wait for AI if a deadline is close.
- Try the made-up line below.
- Check that the reply keeps the stated task and date.
- Use a contact route you trust to check who sent the real notice and what to do.
- Do the real task yourself. Keep proof that it was received.
Sample notice: 'Return the form by October 6.' Explain just this line. The year, how to send it and when it must arrive are not given. List what to ask. Do not claim the notice is real.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

Remove private IDs, addresses and barcodes before asking about a short piece of wording.
