How do I make sense of a test result page in plain words?
Keep results, units, and ranges together for your care team.
A test report may contain a result, a unit, a reference range, and notes. Keep the full page. A number alone can lose its meaning.
An outside-range flag is not a diagnosis by itself. An inside-range result is not proof that there is no problem.
ChatGPT can help phrase a question without seeing your report. Your care team needs the full results and your history to explain what happens next.
- Keep the whole report in a private place.
- Note the test name and date.
- Mark the result or term you want explained.
- Ask the care team what it means for you and what to do next.
- Check when to expect an answer and who to contact.
Help me ask my care team to explain a lab result. Ask what it means for me, whether I need follow-up, and by when. Do not invent a result or diagnose.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

Do not remove units, ranges, or notes from the copy you show your care team. A practice question does not need the report.
