How to put your pain into clear words for the doctor
Keep your own words, useful details and questions for the care team.
Start with where it hurts and what it feels like. Words such as sharp, dull or burning can help if they fit your experience.
Note when it began, how long it lasts and whether it spreads. Describe what it keeps you from doing and what seems to change it.
If your care team uses a pain scale, record the number and the scale. A score is one part of your story; it does not replace the rest.
- Write the place and feeling in a private note.
- Add the timing and any changes.
- Note the effect on sleep and daily tasks.
- List what you tried, with doses and times where relevant.
- Ask the care team what needs checking and when to seek more help.
Make a blank pain note. Include where, what it feels like, when it began, changes, daily impact and what I tried. Leave the answers blank and do not suggest a cause.
Paste the message into ChatGPT, then fill in any blanks before you send it. ChatGPT opens in a new tab. Opening it does not send the message.

Do not wait for AI to judge new or severe pain. Seek medical help if you are worried or your care plan says to call.
