Prepare your first ask

Step 1 of 6

Opening your saved place…

A small task

Start with a short thank-you note.

You can follow this lesson with no ChatGPT account. We will use a made-up example, then you can write a draft here.

Want to try it for real? Open ChatGPT when you reach the practice step. Mayfield's practice box does not send messages to ChatGPT.

One small task is enough. You can use our example or choose your own.

Build your ask

Say what you want and give the facts it needs.

For a note, say what it is for and how it should sound. Add a length if that helps.

TaskWrite a thank-you note.

FactsA neighbour watered my plants.

StyleKeep it warm and under three sentences.

Use made-up details while you learn. Leave out names, addresses, passwords and account details.

A clear ask can help. It does not make every reply right. You will learn to check the reply next.

An example

Give the tool enough to start.

Starting example

Write something nice.

Add the task, a fact and a style.

Revised request

Write a thank-you note for a neighbour who watered my plants. Keep it warm and under three sentences. Do not add facts.

An example AI reply

Thank you for watering my plants. I really appreciate your help!

This is a sample, not a live reply. It fits the facts in the ask. A real reply may differ or add details you need to remove.

Your draft

Prepare an ask here.

Write an ask for a thank-you note in the box below. This saves a draft in Mayfield. To try it in ChatGPT, copy your ask, open ChatGPT, paste it in the chat box and use Send. Return to this lesson to keep learning.

Your practice box, just for you. Your draft saves in this browser. This box is not AI. Leave private details out.

If sign-in, a limit or a payment screen stops you, return here and use the sample. You do not need to buy anything for this lesson.

Start with a few words, or look at the example first.

ChatGPT opens in a new tab or window. Keep this lesson open so you can come back.

Writing here is practice. Sending in ChatGPT is a separate step you can choose to try.
