Let's begin

First, let's open ChatGPT together.

Today you'll send your very first message to an AI, and read a real answer it writes back, just for you. It takes about five minutes.

We'll use ChatGPT. It's free, and it's the friendliest place to start. There are others, but one is plenty for now, we'll keep it simple.

Open it now: in your web browser, type chatgpt.com, or tap the ChatGPT app if it's on your phone. If it asks you to sign in, that's normal, and the free option is all you need.

Take a breath. You cannot break anything here. There is no wrong button.

The whole idea

Talking to AI is just like sending a text.

Look at the bottom of the screen. You'll see a wide box, it usually says “Message ChatGPT” or “Ask anything” inside it.

That box is where you type. Click it once, then type your message in plain, everyday words. No special wording, no computer code, just ask, the way you'd ask a helpful friend.

When you're done, press the Enter key (or tap the little arrow ➤). In a second or two, ChatGPT writes an answer back, right above the box.

One small habit keeps you safe: leave out anything private, no full names, addresses, account numbers, or health details. When in doubt, leave it out.

See the difference? The second message says who it's for, what you want, and how it should feel. That's all a good ask needs, and you'll get the hang of it fast.
