Choose a readable layout

A short list can help you compare choices.

Ask for a list when you need to scan choices. Ask for steps when the order matters. Ask for a short note when you need to contact an office.

The shape should help with your task. A neat list can still leave out a choice or change a rule.

Shorter must still mean the same thing.

Supply the excerpt. Name the layout you want, such as three bullets. Say which choices and limits must stay.

Check the reply against the excerpt. Do not accept added options just because they sound common.

Words such as "one," "all," "may" and "must" can change what a form asks. Keep those meanings when shortening it.

Prepare a list request

Keep an optional choice optional.

Made-up form text: "Tick one guide format: paper or email. You may also request a large-print copy." Ask for a short list that keeps the one-format rule and the optional extra.
