A way to talk it through

You can speak a request instead of typing it.

A spoken chat can be useful when you want to talk through a small task. Start while seated, with time to look at the screen and check the reply.

ChatGPT Voice lets you talk and hear replies. Dictation turns a recording into text you can edit before sending. They are different tools.

Mayfield’s Listen button reads a lesson aloud. It does not hear you or start ChatGPT. The practice box here keeps writing when its save status confirms it; it does not send words to AI.

Start and stop with care

Choose the Voice control, not the dictation mic.

In the ChatGPT phone app or at chatgpt.com, choose the Voice icon by the message box. Allow mic access if you choose to proceed. On a first app use, you may be asked to choose a voice.

Speak once Voice opens. Its mic control mutes or unmutes you. Its exit control ends the chat. Muting is not ending the session.

Access and limits vary by account, device and settings. If Voice is missing or a limit notice appears, you can use text and try Voice later. You do not need to buy a plan for this lesson.

BeforeChoose a quiet spot, a small task and facts you are willing to share.

DuringListen, compare the reply with your task and ask for a change if needed.

AfterUse the exit control and check that the voice session has ended.

Keep passwords and private records out of a practice task. Do not record other people without their agreement. Changing from speech to text does not make a secret safe to share.

You can rehearse the sample without granting mic access. Ask for device help if needed; you can stop at any point.

A written sample

Ask for one small, checkable reply.

Made-up book swap: Sunday at 2 p.m., in the shared room, with no fee. Ask for one short invitation sentence that keeps all four facts. This is written sample text, not a recorded voice exchange.

Example message

Give me one short sentence inviting a friend to a book swap on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the shared room. There is no fee. Keep those facts and add nothing else.

An example AI reply

Come to a free book swap on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the shared room.

The sentence keeps the day, time, place and lack of a fee. A real reply may differ. Check it against the facts before you use it.

Prepare a calm first try

Write the request and your start-and-stop plan.

Made-up book swap: Sunday at 2 p.m., in the shared room, with no fee. Write Tool, Request, Check and End. Plan a Voice try, but do not claim you have done it yet.
