Ask for a reply you can follow

Ask for a pause, then check what happens.

Name both the content and the form: keep my three items, read only the first, then wait for next. This makes the request clear.

AI may keep talking or start before you are ready. Asking it to wait is not a pause button. If you need to stop the session, use its exit control.

When the reply is available as text, you can read it or make a short note of the next item. Do not treat the requested pace as a promise about what you will hear.

Shorter must still be accurate. Keep needed counts and conditions rather than cutting them just to make a line smaller.
