Make the words bigger and easier to see

Small words can tire your eyes. They can make tech feel hard. You are allowed to make things bigger. It does not break anything. You can always change it back. This is a kind thing for your eyes.

Let us make the words nice and big. Take your time. There is no rush. Nothing here can go wrong.

Find your device below, then follow those steps. The buttons may look a little different on yours, that is okay.

On a computer (Windows or Mac)
  1. Open the web page you want to read.
  2. Look on your keyboard for the Ctrl key.
  3. On a Mac, look for the Command key instead.
  4. Hold that key down with one finger.
  5. Keep holding it down.
  6. While holding, tap the plus key.
  7. The plus key sits near the top right.
  8. It shares a key with the equals sign.
  9. You do not need to hold Shift.
  10. One tap is enough.
  11. Each tap makes the words bigger.
  12. Tap it a few times.
  13. When it looks good, let both keys go.
  14. To make words smaller, hold the same key.
  15. Then tap the minus key.
On an iPhone
  1. Find the Settings app.
  2. It looks like little gray gears.
  3. Tap Settings to open it.
  4. Look for Display and Brightness and tap it.
  5. If you cannot find it, use the tip below.
  6. Look for Text Size and tap it.
  7. You will see a slider.
  8. It looks like a little dot on a line.
  9. Drag the dot to the right to make words bigger.
  10. Drag it to the left to make them smaller.
  11. The words change as you drag.
  12. Stop when it looks good.
  13. This makes words bigger in apps like Mail.
  14. A web page in Safari may still look small.
  15. If so, tap the small AA letters near the top.
  16. Then choose a bigger size there.
On an Android phone
  1. Find the Settings app.
  2. It often looks like a small gear.
  3. Tap Settings to open it.
  4. Look for Display and tap it.
  5. It may have a slightly different name on your phone.
  6. Look for Font size or Text size and tap it.
  7. You will see a slider.
  8. It looks like a dot on a line.
  9. Drag the dot to the right to make words bigger.
  10. Drag it to the left to make them smaller.
  11. Stop when the words look good and easy to read.

If you cannot find the setting, tap the search box at the top of Settings. Type "text size" in it. It will take you right to it.

Bigger words are kind to your eyes. You can change it back anytime.
